The Gallery Inn isn't on the edge of Old San Juan looking in - it's a hidden artist's house in the middle of it. Step out onto Norzagaray and the whole walkable old city is yours: cobblestones and color, plazas and galleries, fortresses and sea air - and nightlife as vibrant as Old San Juan itself.

From the private roofdeck
Climb above the house - about forty feet over Nico Bar - and Old San Juan opens all the way around. The private roofdeck, for hotel guests only, gives a full 360-degree view: the old city, the Atlantic, and San Juan Harbor in the distance. There's no bar and no service up here - just the view, and whatever you bring with you. It's one of the quiet privileges of staying in the house.
On foot
A walkable old city
Everything is a stroll away. Wander cobblestone streets lined with color, duck into galleries and the Museo de San Juan just steps from the door, catch the changing art installation strung above Calle Fortaleza, and find Jan D'Esopo's own statues standing around the city she made her home. The shops of pedestrian Viejo San Juan - jewelry, cigars, folk art - fill the lanes in between.
Five centuries deep
History all around
You sleep inside the history here. The old city walls run just past the door; El Morro and San Cristóbal have guarded the harbor for centuries; blue cobblestones - ballast once carried by Spanish ships - still pave the streets; and the tomb of the explorer Juan Ponce de León rests in the cathedral nearby. Every façade has a story, and the Inn is one of them.
After dark
Food, drinks, and nights out
San Juan's food culture is among the world's best - the birthplace of the piña colada, with kitchens that blend the island's many cultures (Casa Bacardi sits across the bay in Cataño, a short ferry away). And the nights are anything but sleepy: Calle San Sebastián, a few steps from the door, is one of the liveliest nightlife streets in the Caribbean. When you'd rather stay in, the house has its own - live piano and cocktails at Studio Hall or The Cannon Club, and a drink with the ocean breeze at Nico Bar.

The Atlantic is always close. Below the walls, the colorful houses of La Perla spill toward the surf; a short drive away, El Escambrón - consistently voted one of Puerto Rico's best beaches - offers calm, golden water and snorkeling among bright fish. Even from the courtyards, the sea air finds you.
