Questions before you arrive

No two rooms are alike. The Gallery Inn is a 22-room boutique hotel carved from six 18th-century buildings, so each room carries its own walls, light, and quirks, along with original art by Jan D'Esopo. Photos shown for each room type are sample photos of that category - because every room is one of a kind, your exact room may vary. Some open to balconies, terraces, or views of the ocean, the gardens, or the old city; the interior Artist Student rooms are the most tucked-away. See all the rooms →

Most rooms are for two guests; only a few include more than one bed. Because this is a historic house, there are no extra cots, day beds, or roll-away mattresses. Additional guests beyond a room's capacity may sometimes be accommodated for $45 per night plus tax, subject to availability - please ask us before booking.

Check-in is at 3:00 PM and check-out is at 11:00 AM. The front desk is staffed from 9:00 AM to midnight. Late check-out is sometimes available for $35 - ask at the front desk, as it depends on the day.

The first night is charged as a deposit at booking, and the remaining balance is charged four days before arrival. You may cancel up to six days before check-in for a refund of the first-night deposit; cancellations five days before check-in forfeit the first-night deposit, and cancellations four days or fewer before check-in are non-refundable. No-shows and early check-outs are non-refundable. All cancellations must be requested in writing at reservations@thegalleryinn.com. Some promotional or discounted rates may carry different terms.

The front desk is staffed until midnight, so if you'll arrive later, please contact us in advance at 787·500·2400 so we can arrange your arrival. Check-ins between midnight and 8:00 AM carry a $35 late check-in fee. If you have a late departing flight, you're welcome to leave your luggage with us in the lobby after check-out - for Gallery Inn guests only.

No, and that's by design. Rooms have Tempur-Pedic beds and original art instead - The Gallery Inn is built around music, courtyards, rooftops, conversation, and Old San Juan just outside the door.

The Gallery Inn is a historic Old San Juan house, not a sealed-off modern resort. Part of its character comes from stairs, old brick, uneven surfaces, layered passageways, older plumbing, original art, and rooms that are all different from one another. Guests should expect the charm and quirks of a centuries-old artist's home.

Usually about a 15–20 minute drive, depending on traffic. Cabs are available at the airport, and guests frequently use Uber and other rideshare apps.

We don't run a shuttle. Most guests reach the Inn from the airport by cab or rideshare (Uber and others) in about 15–20 minutes.

The Inn offers parking on a first-come, first-served basis for an additional $40 per night, with no in-and-out privileges. Parking in Old San Juan is limited, so if you plan to bring a car, please contact us before arrival. Many guests skip the car and use taxis or rideshare from the airport.

The Gallery Inn sits in a living, historic neighborhood, and nearby Calle San Sebastián is one of the liveliest nightlife streets in San Juan - so some rooms catch street and nightlife sound, especially on weekends. Yes. The private roofdeck sits about forty feet above Nico Bar and is open to hotel guests, with a full 360-degree view over the old city, the Atlantic, and San Juan Harbor in the distance. There's no bar or food service up there - guests are welcome to carry up their own glass from below.

No - the private roofdeck is for hotel guests only. If you'd like a rooftop drink without staying the night, Nico Bar at the front of the house is open to everyone.

Yes - the house opens onto courtyards, gardens, patios, and terraces, with plants, sculpture, and quiet corners to slip away to between the rooms and the rooftops.

Yes - you can book a wedding, private dinner, cocktail party, or special event at The Cannon Club, for up to about a hundred guests among the chandeliers and out in the gardens and around the sculpture pool. Call The Cannon Club at 787·500·2300 to plan one.

Yes. The Gallery Inn is home to several exotic birds, including Campeche, Rembrandt, and Michelangelo. Each has a personality of its own, and some even dance or sing along to the music. Guests are welcome to say hello when they see the birds on their perches around the Inn, but please do not touch them.
